The WCU Blitz: Battle of the Immortals is a new annual Chess tournament that aims to bring together the best players from around Wales to compete in an all play all Blitz.

On Saturday, May 11th, 2024, the inaugural Battle of The Immortals Blitz Tournament brought together 32 individuals from various chess clubs, spanning a wide range of playing abilities. The tournament followed a grueling round-robin format, ensuring that every participant faced off against each other at least once. With 31 intense rounds of chess, the day kicked off at 09:45 am and concluded by 18:05 pm, with breaks interspersed to provide much-needed respite for the players.
The standout performance of the day belonged to Fide Master Grzegorz Toczek from Cardiff Chess Club, who secured an impressive 29 points out of 31, clinching the title of overall winner. Duncan Williams from Morriston Chess Club claimed the second position with 26.5 points, followed closely by Nikita Liesniak, also with 26.5 points, but losing the direct encounter tie-break with Duncan.
Among the participants, there were notable achievements across the spectrum of playing abilities. Arena FIDE Master, Joshua McKenna, representing North Cardiff Chess Club, displayed his prowess by securing the 5th position with a commendable 24 points. Ben Bickford from Caerphilly Chess Club impressed with his performance, earning the 4th position with 26 points and bagging one of the under-grading prizes.
Another under-grading prize, U1200, was awarded to Patrick Bourne from Aberystwyth University Chess Club, who secured the 9th position with 22 points. The tournament showcased a mix of seasoned players aiming for victory and newcomers striving to make their mark in the chess community.
Throughout the day, players exhibited a passion for the game, despite occasional illegal moves and missed opportunities. The camaraderie and competitive spirit remained high as all participants persevered through the 31 rounds, showcasing their endurance and love for chess.
Special mentions are deservedly extended to Randall Wright from Bridgend Chess Club, who showed resilience and determination despite initial setbacks, Emma Kong from Cardiff Chess Club, who claimed a rare win over the FIDE master as Black, and 8-year-old Constantine Popov from North Cardiff, who demonstrated a remarkable level of skill beyond his years, earning himself and Emma praise as the future of chess in Wales, from players, spectators and arbiters alike.
As the day came to a close, the tournament organizers expressed gratitude to all participants and announced plans for future editions of the Battle of The Immortals Blitz Tournament. The next installment is scheduled for June 8th, with enthusiastic response already garnering 19 participants. Should the interest exceed the allocated slots, consideration will be given to expanding with a second division of 30.
