The Management board has just been informed that Bev Palmer passed away a couple of months ago,
Bev Palmer was the organising force behind Haverfordwest Chess Club from the 1970s. Under his watch, the club developed from playing an occasional friendly match against Cardigan to participating in the Dyfed League – and then the West Wales League where the club fielded two teams. Many a night he would drive a carload of players to Aberystwyth or Swansea and back.
Several young players attended the club and played in the league teams. Paul Hatchett, David Flower, David Martin, and Stuart Warner all represented Wales in the Glorney Cup. A teacher himself, Bev also encouraged local primary schools to play chess tournaments.
The Management Board wish to send Bev’s relatives and friends our deepest condolences on their sad loss.
