Junior 4NCL: Welsh Dragons snatch second

At the second week-end of the junior 4NCL 206/2017, Welsh Dragons Yellow came second in the second division.

The team – Caspian Fowler, Rachel McIntosh, Neil Stevenson, Harrison Postans and Sam Goodfellow – netted 8 match points in the five-round competition. They won their first three games, before losing to Cambridge Knights in round 4 by 1.5 to 2.5.  This put Cambridge Knights in pole position going into round 5, as they were the only team with 8 match points. However, in that round they lost to the Leicester Reds, who won the competition, while Welsh Dragons Yellow won the unfortunate pairing against Welsh Dragons Green (David McIntosh, Daniel Jaberansari, Sithika Medagedara, Ellison Smith and Callum Smith). The Greens finished fourth in a division with 26 teams.

The Welsh Dragons also fielded a third team in division two, Welsh Dragons Blue: Madeleine Smith, Nayanna Kavalava, Merlin Davies, Rishi Choudhuri and Ben Jaberansari. They came tenth with 6 match points.

In the first division Welsh Dragons Red – Ifan Rathbone-Jones, Hugo Fowler, Duncan MacDonald and George Smith – netted 6 match points, and lost out on third place to a tie-break ruling.

It was particularly pleasing to see those making their debut for the Welsh Dragons slot in to the teams so well, and contribute to their scores.
