St John’s win 2017 Welsh Primary School Championships

St John’s, Cardiff, were convincing winners of the 2017 Welsh Primary School Championships held at Bishop Hedley School Merthyr Tydfil, on Saturday 1 April.

The team of four – Hiya Ray, Anish Choudhury, Sridatta (Sanwi) Dantu, and Benjamin Jaberansari – won all five matches, and netted 16.5 game points out of as possible 20. As well as enjoying this success, the team found out that they had been awarded a place at the ECF Under 11 Open finals at Uppingham in July, thanks to their high score as runner up in the South West regional round.

In the top flight section involving 8 teams, Whitchurch came second with 8 match points. The Dell and The Grange both netted 6 match points, but The Dell came third, thanks to superior game points.

Winners in division 2, involving 31 teams, were Peterston super Ely. The team of Audrey Piguet, Zac Moss, Alexandre Piguet and Tom Cordell-Smith scored 17.5 game points. The Dell B came seconds with 13.5 game points, Whitchurh B third with 12.5 points, and in joint fourth, on 12 points were: Grange B, Roath Park A, and St John’s B.

In the individual competition held in parallel, Harri Gilbert won with 5/5, and sharing second place with 4 points were Alice Potter and Govind Anandkumar.
