Ian White RIP

Sad news has reached us that Ian White has passed away.

Chris Dixon has sent us a short bio below.

A native of Pontypool, Ian attended West Monmouth Grammar School for Boys, representing their chess team on many occasions.  He also represented Wales in the Glorney Cup competition.

Ian was a member of Pontypool Chess Club for around 50 years, playing for the team regularly in local leagues and national competitions. He captained the A team in recent years, for whom he was an “ever present” player.

His playing strength is apparent from the Gwent titles he won – outright champion in 2001 and joint champion in 2004. A tough opponent, Ian would love to “grind out” results in endgames, whether pursuing a difficult win or fighting hard for a draw.

Ian was of a quiet and private disposition, but nevertheless he was a popular member of the chess community, both in Pontypool and beyond – a true gentleman.

His sudden passing was a shock to us all, and he will be very sadly missed.

The funeral will be at the Crematorium in Croesyceiliog on Monday, December 9th, at 10.30 am. No flowers are requested, but there will be an opportunity to make a donation to the British Heart Foundation.
