St John’s cruise into the finals of the ECF Under 11 Open

Playing at home on Sunday 28 January, St John’s A-team emerged as convincing winners of the South West regional finals of the ECF Under 11 Open. Scoring 28.5 game points out of a possible 30, St John’s have booked their place in the national finals, to be played at Uppingham school in July.

The Dell snatched the runners-up spot, just one game point ahead of Rhydypenau A. Going into the final round, The Dell were 5 points ahead, but had to play the all-conquering St John’s, who had only dropped half a point in their first four rounds. Credit must go to both Rhydypenau A for cranking up the pressure with a 6-0 win; and to Ossian Jessop, of The Dell, for getting his team over the line with a win against the current Welsh Under 9 Champion, Sanwi Dantu.

Melin Gruffydd came fourth with 14 game points, followed by the B teams of Rhydypenau and St John’s.
