Anyone interested in organising a team should contact Kevin Staveley (kevin.staveley@btinternet.com The Vale will not be taking part in this season’s competition so one new team will be replacing them in the event.
The Adult Community Learning Services of Cardiff Council are running a Chess Course for Beginners starting on Tuesday 18 September and running for 11 weeks (not including Half-Term). If you have any friends or relatives, neighbours or colleagues in the Cardiff area who might be interested in giving chess a go please let them know about this course. Full details at http://www.cardiff.gov.uk/learn The July ECU Newsletter can be viewed here. The tournament was held this year in the University of West Scotland in Paisley, near Glasgow. The tournament hall was large, comfortable and air conditioned, with an adjacent coffee bar, although the lack of team rooms was a slight handicap. The Netherlands entered four teams and so, for the first time for many years we had a six nation competition with a five round all play all format. All parties are enthusiastic and it thus appears that this ideal format will continue well into the future. Continue reading Glorney Gilbert International Tournament 2018 122 entries were received. The North Wales Open was won by Jonah Willow with 5/5. Jonah is just fourteen years old. David Jameson and John Shakespeare were 3rd=. Oleg Cukovs won the Major. Mark Bastow(Colwyn Bay) was =2nd. Ifan Rathbone-Jones was =5th with 3.5/5. John Harris(Forest of Dean) won the Minor with 5.5. The games can now be downloaded from the Games page. The International Corresopondence Chess Federation (ICCF) are seeking players wishing to take part in the Colwyn Bay and Friends v ICCF match on Monday 20th August at 20.00 as part of the ICCF Congress activities. On Saturday 15 September there will be afternoon of fast-paced, light-hearted chess for secondary school players all standards. This will be held at Whitchurch Rugby club, the home of North Cardiff chess club, from 2-5 p.m. (the full address is Whitchurch Rugby Sports & Social Club, Samuels Crescent, Velindre Road, Cardiff, CF14 2TH). Continue reading Chess event for Secondary School players on Saturday 15 September After a thoroughly entertaining and hard fought event, both the Over 50’s and Over 65’s teams competed with varying degrees of success despite both teams experiencing difficuties with their players. The Over 50’s team were seeded 52nd of 67 teams but failed to acheive their expectation despite valiant efforts by individuals (in particulat Jiohn Fletcher) resulting in a final standing of 55th out of 67 teams. In fairness, they were hampered by the loss of Huw Morcom roughly halfway through the event. However, the Over 65’s team were seeded 35th out of 61 teams. They exceeded their expectations resulting in a final placing of 25th out of 61 teams. As usual they relied on an outstanding performance from Iolo Jones who was unbeaten and despite John Thornton suffering throughout by Shingles. All the details can be found here. |
