2018 Welsh Championship

There is a misprint on the Welsh Championnship entry form.

Please note that under ratings (page 2) the reference to Jan 2017 WCU list should read Jan 2018.

Similarly the late fee kicks in on 1st March 2018 (not 1st March 2017).

Please also note that there is a World Championship Boxing Match in the Principality Stadium on the night of Saturday, 31st March – the hotel is fully booked for this night, and also there is very limited accommodation in Cardiff for this night.

Glorney Gilbert Tournament 2018: 16-18 July

The dates for 2018 Glorney Gilbert Tournament have now been finalised: it will be held at the University of the West of Scotland, Paisley, from 16th to 18th of July, with travelling on the 15th and 19th.

Chepstow secures a spot in the ECF Team Challenge finals

Chepstow school have gone through to the national finals of the ECF Team Challenge, after winning the West Country Region. At this event, held at Bristol Grammar on the evening on Monday 5 February, Chepstow A scored 12 points out of a possible 16, just half a point ahead of Sir Thomas Rich’s and Churchill Academy.

The 30th junior Cardiff andVale Championships were held at Cardiff County Hall on Sunday 4 February. Supporting this event were Cardiff Bay Rotary Club, and presenting the prizes was Major of Cardiff, Cllr Bob Derbyshire.

Calling all Welsh chess players at secondary schools

Recently, the junior committee of the WCU has appointed Richard Stevenson as officer for Secondary School Chess.

One of his first initiatives is to organise an afternoon of fast-paced, light-hearted chess for secondary players all standards. This will be held at Whitchurch Rugby club, the home of North Cardiff chess club, from 1-4 p.m. on Saturday 3 March (the full address is Whitchurch Rugby Sports & Social Club, Samuels Crescent, Velindre Road, Cardiff, CF14 2TH).

St John’s cruise into the finals of the ECF Under 11 Open

Playing at home on Sunday 28 January, St John’s A-team emerged as convincing winners of the South West regional finals of the ECF Under 11 Open. Scoring 28.5 game points out of a possible 30, St John’s have booked their place in the national finals, to be played at Uppingham school in July.

Welsh Girls’ Championships 2018

The change of venue for the Girls’ Championships from its long-time home at Inglefield House in Monmouth to my home town Caerphilly meant I could have an extra hour in bed!!  Sadly we seemed to lose the Inglefield girls, but there was a good turn out with a few girls coming down from North Wales, as well as players from Gwent and West Wales along with the more local entry.
