Belated news from the World Cadets Tournament held in Santiago in Spain during November.
Hiya Ray was the only Welsh player to take part, playing in the Girls U12 Championship. She was given financial support with a bursary from the WCU. These bursaries are to support players whose rating suggests they have a good chance of scoring 50% or more in individual World Championship events.
Hiya should be congratulated on her performance in this event where she scored 6/11, her opposition including 4 WCMs and a WFM, against who she scored 2 wins. Her FIDE rating has gone up by 91 points as a result of the event. Hiya is the first Welsh junior to have been supported with such a bursary, and it is very encouraging that she achieved the target score the junior committee would have wished. The hope is that other players will reach high enough ratings to justify support in future, and by entering with such financial support, will bring Wales further success from these events.
The annual quadrangular tournament was held in Liverpool on 8th-9th December.
Wales best placing was 2nd in the U16, 2.5 game points behind the winners Scotland. The U14 team finished 3rd, but were only beaten by the winners Scotland. The U12 competition was very close with Wales in last place, but only 3 game points behind the winners, North of England.

Sad news has reached us that Bill Flew has passed away.
Bill was a regular player in Upper killay and initialy a captain of the second team before becoming the first team captain.
He started playing in the league for Pennard in the 1970’s, before moving away to the Midlands.
He retured to West Wales in the 2000’s. He often reminded us about the fixture arrangements in thr Midlands at our AGM.
He was a very friendly person and liked it when his opponent played PQ4. He will be sadly missed.
The Welsh Chess Union woul like to express our condolences to Bill’s family and friends at this very sad time.
Bill Flew’s funeral is on Mon 17 Dec with a service at Saint Mary’s Church Pennard at 2.30 pm followed by 4 pm at Llanelli Crematorium and back to Pennard Golf Club at 5.30 pm.
