At the Wiltshire open junior championships, held on Sunday 5 November, Daniel Jaberansari won the Under18s with 5/6, and younger brother Benjamin came second in the under 10s with 5/6. For Benjamin, his success has allowed him to qualify for the major section of the U10 London Junior chess championships, which will take place on 16 and 17 December.
At the NYCA competitions held at Kennilworth on 4 November South Wales came second out of six teams in the under 16s, and fourth out of six teams in the under 12s. Meanwhile, North Wales and Cheshire came third in the under 16s and sixth in the under 12s.

Very sad news has reached us that former Welsh Champion Colin Gilbert passed away on Monday October 30th 2017. He was 85.
Funeral details to follow.

During the 88th FIDE Congress in Goynuk, Antalya, Turkey the amendments to the Laws of Chess 2017 have been approved by FIDE Executive Board (decision EB-2017/26 – to approve the proposed changes to the Laws of Chess).
It means, that the same regulations regarding an illegal move for standard, rapid and blitz games are valid from 1 January 2018.

The first of three Welsh Junior Congresses to be held this autumn took place on Saturday 21 October at Bishop Hedley High School in Merthyr. Daniel Shek won the Open section, Yuxuan Wu the Premiership, Rishi Paul the Major and Sarthak Nukalapati the Starters.

At the 2017 Welsh Secondary School Championships, hosted at Bishop Hedley High School in Merthyr on Saturday 21 October, the joint winners were two schools from Cardiff: St John’s, and the previous holders, Howell’s. Third were Chepstow School.
