News has just reached the WCU that David Rhys Lewis (Pentyrch) has passed away suddenly at the tragically young age of 52.
The WCU wish to send our condolences to his many friends and relatives at this very sad time.

News has just reached the WCU that David Rhys Lewis (Pentyrch) has passed away suddenly at the tragically young age of 52. At the 3rd Welsh Seniors Championships and South Wales Summer Congress, held in Penarth on 1-3 September 2017, Lee Davies netted first placed in the Seniors with 4/5. Peter Bevan and AGM Rudy Van Kemenade shared second with 3.5 points. In partnership with the UK Chess Acadamy and organised by Wales Tamil Sangam with the support of Cardiff City Council are holding training sessions for juniors at the Millenium Centre (Preseli Room – Floor 2) in Cardiff August 24th – 31st. In order to take part in the 2018 Welsh U8, 9, 10 or 11 Championships players must have achieved the following ratings:
U8 (born 2010 or later) over 200,
U9 (born 2009 or later) over 550,
U10 (born 2008 or later) over 700,
U11 (born 2007 or later) over 800.
For qualification for the WCU Junior Championships a live rapidplay rating at any time between 1st September and 31st December 2017 that has satisfied the qualifying target will be accepted. Players should notify John Thornton at john@wcurapidplayratings.co.uk
For those who do not qualify or are unable to play a full weekend, there will be rating restricted one day Challengers Sections with upper rating limits (on 31st December 2017) as follows
